EliteXC: Unfinished Buisiness Features Local MMA Fighters

July 29, 2008

Local Fighters from California filled the fight card on Saturday’s EliteXC event aired on CBS.  Featured on the Televised portion of the event was Stockon native and former UFC/Pride standout Nick Diaz, who took apart Thomas “Wild Man” Denny, a seasoned veteran of the Gladiator Challenge promotion competing out of Victorville, SoCal.  Jake Shields, training out of San Francisco, earned the EliteXC Welterweight Title with a quick tapout victory over Nick Thompson.  The main event was a rematch between Robbie Lawler and Elk Grove’s Scott Smith for the EliteXC Middleweight Title, but was unable to recover from Lawler’s knees to the body in the second round.

The event featured lesser known local fighters in the preliminary bouts as well:

Jeremy Freitag (Sacramento) lost a decision to Anthony Ruiz (Modesto)

Mike Cook (San Jose) was KO’d by an impressibe slam form Carl Seumanutafa (from Global Knockout, a promotion in Jackson, Ca)

Drew Montgomery (Rancho Cordova) earned a TKO Victory Due To Doctor’s Stoppage over Brandon Tarn (Roseville, Ca). This fight left the blood stains on the mat that were clearly visible on the CBS show.  I haven’t found any video, but some pictures are featured here:

Last but not least was a KO victory by David Douglas (Stockton) over Marlon Mathias from Chute Box Acadamy, a bout that lasted only 12 seconds.

EliteXC/ShowXC promotion is providing huge opportunities for local fighters to make a name for themselves. While they don’t have the production quality of a UFC or Pride event, they are showing improvement with this second show.
